On July 6, 2014, we had the pleasure of working with the incredibly talented Delaney Gibson on her new music video for her single “When We Were Young” off her 2014 album Tall Like The Tree (available for purchase, by the way!). When we met Delaney for the first time in February at Tacos N Tequila and began going over some ideas, visual references, and inspiration for the video. We knew it would be awhile until we went into production on it, and during that time the concept grew and evolved over the course of several months. When we found and booked a beautiful, cozy, and colorful home on AirBNB, ideas began to cement and the treatment was updated with new scenes and story arcs for the music video. The song itself is infectious: it’s bouncy, catchy, and as sweet as can be. Delaney’s brand of theatrical pop is so engaging and we wanted to create a music video that perfectly reflected the tone and experience of hearing the song for the first time.
Production was one of the most fun shoots we’ve had. Because of the small size of the shooting location and close quarters, we made sure to keep the crew as small as we could while still functioning smoothly. Keller Davis was directing (even being under the weather), David Lackey was DP, Chris Weachock served as assistant director and in production design capacities, Jensen Yancey was on crew gaffing, Laura Martinez was hair and makeup, and Yana Kushner handled behind the scenes photography. The shoot itself involved two of the most difficult elements of production: a baby and an animal. However, we couldn’t have been in better company since little Copeland was so well behaved and continuously adorable, and Asterisk the hedgehog was easy and played to the camera well. We’re proud of how the finished music video turned out and we wanted to share some of these incredible behind the scenes set photos from Yana Kushner. Also, check out the music video if you have not yet seen it!
